Creating accounts

OpenX supports multiple account types, depending on your configuration. Initially, OpenX sets up your main—or root—account. Then you set up additional accounts, each representing a component of your business structure—either a business or business unit, or a business relationship. For each account, you need to specify:

Depending on your OpenX user access, you can create any type of account through the Accounts tab. In addition, you can create publisher accounts through the InventoryAd space available on a website or app. The basic unit of inventory for OpenX is an ad unit. tab when classifying inventory, and advertiser accounts through the Orders tab when setting up orders. Alternatively, you can create managed accounts through an ad networkAn OpenX account type, which represents a business that manages other businesses and typically contains and manages both publisher accounts and advertiser accounts.'s View Account screen.

Important: After you create and save an account, you cannot delete it.

Account types and account experiences.  For each account you set up in OpenX Ad ServerA complete digital advertising platform where publishers sell, manage, and deliver their advertising inventory across all digital formats., you need to specify an account type and account user experience, which determine the capabilities that the account has in OpenX Ad Server, as well as the view that users will see when logging in to that account. For example, indicating that an account is an advertiserIn OpenX, an account type that represents a business that runs advertising campaigns to display ads on websites. account means that users may create orders in it, but it would not contain inventory-related objects, such as sites.

Note: The only account type that can contain, and therefore manage, other accounts, is an ad network.

In addition, when you set up accounts, you choose an account experience, which determines what view users for that account will have. The following table describes the account experiences available for each account type:

Account types and experiences

Account type Available account experiences Description
Advertiser Advertiser Depending on a specific user's capabilities, they'll see all screens for managing the advertiser account, along with all screens necessary for trafficking their ads.
Agency N/A Depending on the user's specific capabilities, they'll see all the screens necessary to run reports for the accounts they have relationships with.
Network Display Network Depending on a user's capabilities, they'll see all screens for managing the network and its accounts.
Publisher Enterprise Publisher Depending on a user's specific capabilities, they'll see all screens for managing the publisher account, along with all screens necessary for managing their inventory and trafficking ads to it.
Self-serve Publisher Depending on a user's specific capabilities, they'll see all screens for managing their inventory to sell through the exchange.

Begin creating an account

The following steps are the same, no matter which type of account you create:

  1. Hover over Admin and click Accounts.
  2. Click Create Account.
  3. This displays the Create Account screen, where you specify details for the new account.

  4. In the Name field, type a name for the new account. This name must be unique.
  5. (Optional) Enter a Description to help others recognize this account.
  6. In the Managing Account list, select the managing account that you want to create the new account for.
  7. This establishes a natural relationship between the managing account and the new account you are creating. Only ad network accounts appear in this list since they can contain other accounts.

    Important: After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

Depending on your user access, you can create the following types of accounts:

Advertiser accounts

An advertiser account represents a container account for orders.

To add an advertiser account from the accounts list:

  1. Perform the steps described in Begin creating an account.

  2. In the Account Type list, select Advertiser.
  3. Important: After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

  4. In the Account Experience list, select the experience for the advertiser account, which determines what view its users will have:

    • Advertiser. Depending on their specific capabilities, a user's view includes tabs and screens for managing the advertiser account along with screens necessary for trafficking their ads.

  5. In the Currency list, select a financial currency for the account.

    Important: After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

    • OpenX Ad Server: Only accounts that use the same currency can buy and sell ad space because OpenX Ad Server does not support cross-currency transactions.
    • OpenX Ad Exchange does convert currencies when running auctions.
  6. In the Country of Business list, select the primary country of business for this account.

    Important: After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

  7. In the Default Order Time zone list, select a time zone for the orders associated with this account.

  8. (Optional) Specify the following additional details for the new account.

  9. Do one of the following to complete the new account setup:

    • Click Create and Add User. This opens the Create User screen with a confirmation message for the new account, where you can start adding users for the new account.

    • Click Create. The Create Account screen closes, and a confirmation message for the new account appears above the accounts list. You can add users for the account at a later time.

When you are finished adding the new account, it appears in your list on the Accounts tab.

Agency accounts

An ad agency represents an account which is typically responsible for viewing and analyzing reporting data for various advertiser accounts.

To add an agency account:

  1. Perform the steps described in Begin creating an account.
  2. In the Account Type list, select Ad Agency.

    Important: After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

  3. In the Currency list, select a financial currency for the account.

    Important: After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

    • OpenX Ad Server: Only accounts that use the same currency can buy and sell ad space because OpenX Ad Server does not support cross-currency transactions.
    • OpenX Ad Exchange does convert currencies when running auctions.
  4. In the Country of Business list, select the primary country of business for this account.

    Important: After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

  5. In the Viewable Advertisers field, start typing in and select the advertiser accounts to establish relationships with. These represent the advertisers for whom the agency views and analyzes data.

  6. (Optional) External Identifier. Type a free-form reference ID.

  7. Do one of the following to complete the new account setup:

    • Click Create and Add User. This opens the Create User screen with a confirmation message for the new account, where you can start adding users for the new account.

    • Click Create. The Create Account screen closes, and a confirmation message for the new account appears above the accounts list. You can add users for the account at a later time.

When you are finished adding the new account, it appears in your list on the Accounts tab.

Ad network accounts

An ad network account represents a business that manages publisher's inventory and advertiser's demand against that inventory. It can contain other OpenX accounts such as publisher accounts and advertiser accounts.

To create an ad network account:

  1. Perform the steps described in Begin creating an account.

  2. In the Account Type list, select Ad Network.

    Important: After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

  3. Select the Display Network Account Experience in the list, which provides a user view that includes the tabs and screens necessary for managing the network and its accounts.

  4. In the Currency list, select a financial currency for the account.

    • OpenX Ad Server: Only accounts that use the same currency can buy and sell ad space because OpenX Ad Server does not support cross-currency transactions.
    • OpenX Ad Exchange does convert currencies when running auctions.

    Important: After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

  5. In the Country of Business list, select the primary country of business for this account.

    Important: After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

    (Optional) External Identifier. Type a free-form reference ID.
  6. Do one of the following to complete the new account setup:

    • Click Create and Add User. This opens the Create User screen with a confirmation message for the new account, where you can start adding users for the new account.

Managed accounts

For ad network accounts (containers for other accounts), you can quickly add managed accounts through the view account screen for the ad network account. This way, you do not have to specify a managing account during account setup. Rather, OpenX automatically populates the Managing Account setting with the selected account, thus establishing a natural relationship between the managing account, and the new account.

To add a managed account:

  1. On the Accounts tab, click the link for the ad network account you want to create a managed account for. This opens the view account screen.

  2. On the Managed Accounts tab, click Create Account.

  3. In the Create Account screen, specify the appropriate details for the new account. OpenX automatically populates the Managing Account setting with the selected account.

  4. Do one of the following to finish setting up the managed account:

    • Click Create and Add User. This opens the Create User screen with a confirmation message for the new account, where you can start adding users for the new account.

    • Click Create. The Create Account screen closes, and a confirmation message for the new account appears above the list of managed accounts. You can add users for the account at a later time.

Publisher accounts

This publisher account type represents a container account for inventory, which may be classified for monetization specifically through the exchange, or through other means.

To add a publisher account:

  1. Perform the steps described in Begin creating an account.

  2. In the Account Type list, select Publisher. After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

  3. In the Account Experience list, select one of the following experiences for the publisher account, which determines what view its users will have.

    • Enterprise Publisher. A user's view includes tabs and screens for managing the publisher account, along with all screens necessary for managing their inventory and trafficking ads to it.

      Tip: If you are setting up a Publisher account for Video (in Limited Availability), choose this option. For general video setup and best practices, refer to Video setup best practices for publishers.

    • Self-serve Publisher. A user's view will include tabs and screens for managing their inventory to sell through OpenX Ad Exchange.

  4. In the Currency list, select a financial currency for the account.

    • OpenX Ad Server: Only accounts that use the same currency can buy and sell ad space because OpenX Ad Server does not support cross-currency transactions.
    • OpenX Ad Exchange does convert currencies when running auctions.

    Important: After you create and save the new account, you cannot change this setting.

  5. In the Country of Business list, select the primary country of business for this account.

  6. Publisher Revenue ModelThe revenue relationship or deal type established between an ad network and the publishers that they directly manage.. If revenue sharingAn OpenX Ad Server feature that allows ad networks to manage and track revenue splits with the publishers they manage. is enabled, change the revenue model setting for this account to specify how to split revenue for all sites and ad units that belong to it. You can also change the revenue model for each siteAn OpenX component that represents top-level domains or sub-domains and is used to organize ad units. Sites enable you to target and report on inventory performance. and ad unit that belong to the publisher account (when creating or editing sites or ad units).
  7. (Optional) Specify the following additional details for the new account.

    • Settings. If enabled, select specific features to be displayed for the new publisher account through their Dashboard tab and in reports.

    • External Identifier. Type a free-form reference ID.

  8. Do one of the following to complete the new account setup:

    • Click Create and Add User. This opens the Create User screen with a confirmation message for the new account, where you can start adding users for the new account.

    • Click Create. The Create Account screen closes, and a confirmation message for the new account appears above the accounts list. You can add users for the account at a later time.

When you are finished adding the new account, it appears in your list on the Accounts tab.
