Creating ad units

Create an ad unitIn OpenX, the smallest inventory component that represents the space on a site where ads display. for each unit of ad space on your website or mobile appSynonymous with mobile. Refers to the use of an app via a mobile device, specifically to differentiate from mobile web.. Each ad unit belongs to a siteAn OpenX component that represents top-level domains or sub-domains and is used to organize ad units. Sites enable you to target and report on inventory performance., and the settings for the container site are used as defaults for each ad unit.

You can create email, linear videoAn ad unit type that consists of video ads that play in sequence with video content in a video player. For example, this could be pre-, mid-, or post-roll., non-linear video, mobile, native, video companionAn ad that serves in conjunction with a video ad and is located outside of the video player., or web ad units.

Note: If you are reading this guide with linear video (in Limited Availability) in mind, refer to the Video setup best practices for publishers page for general video best practices.

Tip: If you have an existing ad unit that is similar to the one you want to create, select it in the list of ad units and click the clone button. You can then edit it to make any needed changes.

To create an ad unit:

  1. Open the View Site screen of the site for which you want to create an ad unit.

  2. Click Create Ad Unit.

    This opens the Create Ad Unit screen where you must specify required attributes for the ad unit.

  3. In the Name field, enter a unique name.

  4. Select an Ad Unit Type and specify settings for it.

    In the Ad Unit Type list, select the Delivery MediumThe manner in which an end-user is exposed to ad inventory, such as web or mobile. for this ad unit (the way the ads will be viewed).

    Note: The default is the selected Default Delivery Medium setting for the ad unit's site container. The selected Ad Unit Type determines additional settings that you need to specify for the ad unit; some of the settings in the Create Ad Unit screen change based on your selection.

    Choose one of the following delivery mediums. Click the name of the delivery medium for setup information specific to that medium.

  5. If revenue sharingAn OpenX Ad Server feature that allows ad networks to manage and track revenue splits with the publishers they manage. is enabled, you can change the PublisherIn OpenX, an account type that represents a business with ad space to sell. Revenue ModelThe revenue relationship or deal type established between an ad network and the publishers that they directly manage. setting, which specifies how to split revenue for the ad unit. The default is the selected Publisher Revenue Model for the site to which the ad unit belongs.

  6. (Optional) In the External IdentifierA free-form reference ID. For example, "Debbie's Account." field, type a free-form reference ID.
