In OpenX Ad ServerA complete digital advertising platform where publishers sell, manage, and deliver their advertising inventory across all digital formats., you need to create an account for each of your businesses or business relationships and specify various account attributes. Specific account attributes, such as account typeIndicates the intended purpose of an account, which determines what objects it can contain and influences what users logged in to the account can do in OpenX. For example, advertiser accounts contain orders, publisher accounts contain inventory, and ad networks contain other accounts., managing accountThe account relationship established between a container account (parent) and its sub-accounts (children), which provides the parent account full read and write access its managed accounts., and account experience, when combined with user capabilities, determine what tasks a user can perform on the account, and what access the account has to other accounts.

Creating accounts

Note: The ability to create accounts and users is available only in OpenX Ad Server. If you do not have Ad Server, please visit the OpenX Support Community to find out how to create users and grant them roles.

You can add managed accounts from the Accounts page or directly from the ad networkAn OpenX account type, which represents a business that manages other businesses and typically contains and manages both publisher accounts and advertiser accounts. account pages. The selected ad network account will be automatically set as the Managing Account for the new account. This establishes a natural relationship between the managing account and the new account you are creating.

Note: After you create an account, you will not be able to edit most of its settings, except for Name, Description, or External IdentifierA free-form reference ID. For example, "Debbie's Account.".

To create an account:

  1. Go to Admin > Accounts.
  2. Click Create Account.
  3. The Create Account page is displayed.

  4. Enter a unique, descriptive name for the new account, select its managing account and the account type.

    Depending on the Account Type you select, additional fields appear.

  5. Using the account settings table below, provide the appropriate information, type and select a financial currency and the primary country of business for the account, and provide any additional information, such as account description or external ID.
  6. Do one of the following to complete the new account setup:

    • To save the account information and to start adding users to it, click Create and Add User.

      The Create User page appears, where you can add users to the newly created account.

    • To save the account information, click Create. You can add users for the account at a later time.

The newly created account becomes active and is displayed in the list of all available accounts on the Accounts page and on the Managed Accounts page of the selected managing ad network account.

Account settings

The table below lists all account settings that may be displayed, including additional settings that appear and apply only to certain types of accounts (indicated in the parentheses).



Name Enter a descriptive, unique name that would help you identify the account.
Description (Optional) Provide additional details about the account to help others recognize it.
Managing Account


Type and select an ad network account for which you want to create the new account.

If you are creating the new managed account from the Managed Accounts page of the container ad network account, leave the selected ad network account as the managing account, unless you want to change it.

Account Type


Depending on your user access, you can select the following types of accounts:

Account Experience



Select the appropriate user experience, or a user view. The available options vary based on the selected account type:

  • (Advertiser) Advertiser. A user view that includes pages for managing the advertiser account along with screens necessary for trafficking their ads.
  • (Ad Network) Display Network. A user view that includes pages necessary for managing the network and its accounts.
  • (Ad Network) Mobile AppSynonymous with mobile. Refers to the use of an app via a mobile device, specifically to differentiate from mobile web. Developer. A user view that includes pages necessary for managing the network and its accounts for mobile apps.
  • (Publisher) Enterprise Publisher. A user view that includes pages for managing the publisher account, along with all screens necessary for managing their inventory and trafficking ads to it.

    If you are setting up a Publisher account for Video, choose this option. For general video setup and best practices, see Video setup best practices for publishers.

  • (Publisher) Self-serve Publisher. A user's view that includes pages for managing their inventory to sell through OpenX Ad Exchange.


Type and select a financial currency for the account.

Note: OpenX Ad Exchange converts currencies when running auctions, while OpenX Ad Server does not support cross-currency transactions (only accounts that use the same currency can buy and sell ad space).

Country of Business


Type and select the primary country of business for this account.

Default Order Time zone (Advertiser only)

Type and select a time zone for the orders associated with this account.

Attribution Tracking (Advertiser only)

Select this check box to enable mobile attribution tracking for this account.

Ad limit per pageviewWhat is displayed each time a browser requests a web page. One pageview might register as multiple hits on the server because pages can contain more than one element, such as several banners. Since pageviews do not account for browsers that are set to disable images, they are an unreliable way of gauging the success of a campaign. (Advertiser only)

Select this check box to limit the number of ads that display for this advertiser to one on a single page. (This does not affect companion line items.)

Note: OpenX honors this ad limit only for ad unit groupA collection of ad units where related ads display together at the same time. or multi-ad unitThe smallest inventory component that represents the space on a site where ads display. requests.

Viewable Advertisers (Ad Agency only)

Type and select the advertiser accounts to establish relationships with. These represent the advertisers for whom the agency views and analyzes data.

Publisher Revenue ModelThe revenue relationship or deal type established between an ad network and the publishers that they directly manage. (Publisher only)

If revenue sharingAn OpenX Ad Server feature that allows ad networks to manage and track revenue splits with the publishers they manage. is enabled, select the revenue model to specify how to split revenue for all sites and ad units that belong to this account. You can later change the revenue model for each siteAn OpenX component that represents top-level domains or subdomains and is used to organize ad units. Sites enable you to target and report on inventory performance. and ad unit that belongs to the publisher account, when creating or editing sites or ad units.

Settings (Publisher only)

Select the types of data to be displayed for the publisher account on its Dashboard tab and in reports.

External Identifier (Optional) Type a free-form reference ID.

Managing accounts

To view all available accounts, go to Admin > Accounts. The Accounts tab is displayed, where you can:

  • View the name, status, type, experience, managing account, and other details of all your accounts.
  • Sort the list by clicking the corresponding column headings.

    Tip: Use the Show Inactive button and the Status column to sort the list by status.

  • Search accounts by their name.
  • Filter accounts by status, type, experience, and managing account. Just click the filter icon next to the search field and enter any of the criteria as needed. To hide the filter fields, click the filter icon again.
  • Create new accounts.
  • Edit, add users, add inventory, view performance of the existing accounts. For advertiser accounts, you can also add competitor accounts to avoid having your ads displayed next to each other. Just click the corresponding action button for the individual account you want to manage.

    Note: You can edit only the Name, Description, and External Identifier for an existing account. You can't edit any other settings.

  •  Make individual or multiple accounts inactive or inactive and have the inactive accounts be displayed or hidden in the list of all accounts. For example, to make several old accounts inactive but still displayed in the list:
    1. Click the checkboxes next to the accounts that you want to manage.
    2. Click the Actions > Make Inactive above the list and confirm your action.
    3. Click Show Inactive and, if needed, click the Status column to sort the list accordingly.

Viewing individual accounts

To view the details of a specific individual account, go to Admin > Accounts and click the name of the account in the list.

The account page appears with the general information about the account, such as its IDs, type and managing account name, and breadcrumbs of the account hierarchy at the top. Below the account information, several tabs are displayed, which differ based on the of the selected account.

Managed accounts

Ad network only

Displays the list of accounts that the selected account manages. You can add managed accounts and view or modify their details as necessary.


Displays the list of users whose primary account is the selected account. You can add, view, and modify details for them.


Displays performance metrics for the account, such as total impressions, click-through-rate, and conversions. In addition, you can view detailed reports on the Reports tab.

Advertiser only

Displays the list of advertisers that the selected account does not want to share ad space with. It also displays which accounts have set the selected account as their competitor.

Use this tab to set up competitive exclusions.

Setting up competitive exclusions

In many cases, advertisers do not want their ads to display on the same web page as a competitor's ads. To support this, set competitive exclusions for advertiser accounts that share the same managing account. You do this on the Competitors tab on the selected advertiser account page.

Note: OpenX honors your competitive exclusions only for ad unit group requests and multi-ad unit requests.

To set competitive exclusions:

  1. Go to Admin > Accounts, find and click the name of the advertiser account in the list.

  2. Click Competitors > Create Account Competitor.
  3. On the displayed page, type and select one or multiple accounts to be set as competitors.

  4. Click Create Account Competitor.

The competitive relationships appear in the list on the Competitors page, where you can manage the competitive exclusions for your advertisers as follows:

  • To delete a competitor account, click the Delete button next to it.

  • To view a competitor account details, click the account link.
