Rewarded videoA type of linear video ad or ad unit. A user opts into watching a non-skippable video ad in exchange for a non-liquid, in-game reward after viewing the ad. Examples of rewards are: an extra life, continued play, a coupon, a discount code, or something else without monetary value. Rewarded video is not the same as incentivized video. motivates viewers to watch non-skippable video ads by giving them a reward in exchange for their attention and time. For example, this reward could be an extra life, a new character, or a sought-after item.
Note: Rewarded video is not the same as incentivized videoA type of linear video ad or ad unit. Incentivized video differs from rewarded video in that viewers are paid in cash or some other liquid reward, like a gift card..
In 2016, Unity Ads surveyed mobile game players and developers. On their blog, they reported the following:
- 71% of players preferred watching in-game video ads (54% rewarded video; 17% interstitialA full-screen ad displayed in content transitions. For example, a video ad that loads between levels of a mobile game. video) to in-app purchases (IAP; 11%) and premium pricing (18%).
- 62% of players reported regularly choosing to engage with rewarded video ads.
- 52% of developers cited video ads as providing the highest revenue per user.
Note: OpenX currently supports rewarded video by passing the rewarded video signal from publishers to demand partners in bid requests. OpenX does not currently provide currency management features, such as verifying a user has completed a video, or indicating that a user should be rewarded after video completion.
Rewarded video example
Here's an example of a user's experience with rewarded video for a mobile game:
- The user, Casey, runs out of coins.
- Casey chooses to watch a video ad in exchange for more coins.
- A non-skippable video ad plays.
- The app developer rewards Casey with coins after the video ad ends.
Benefits of rewarded video
Rewarded video has benefits for all involved: publishers/developers, demand partners, and users.
Some users may make in-app or in-game purchases. That is one source of revenue. Rewarded video is another source.
Rewarded video is especially appealing to users who don't make in-app or in-game purchases but want the benefit of those purchases, thus unlocking additional impressions and revenue. Since the user has additional resources once they receive a reward, their engagement could also increase.
The Unity Ads study mentioned above reported the following from developers who integrated rewarded video ads into existing games:
- 62%: Retention rose or stabilized.
- 86%: IAP increased or were unaffected.
The ads that users see are non-skippable and receive the their full attention. This increases the potential for conversion and a higher ROI.
Users receive rewards, items they value. These rewards can lead to increased engagement and enjoyment of an app or siteAn OpenX component that represents top-level domains or subdomains and is used to organize ad units.
